The community of Haslington, East Coast Demerara will be buzzing with intense excitement this weekend as they prepare for an invasion of sports and cultural participants from neighboring villages for the Sparta United Sports and Culture Festival set for today and tomorrow at the Haslington Playfield from 08:00hrs daily. Teams to participate in the sports competitions will come from Mahaica, Ann’s Grove, Victoria, Belfield, Golden Grove, Haslington, Paradise, Bareroot, Enmore, Enterprise Buxton, Beterverwagting and Monedderlust of West Coast Berbice.
Today, the Seven Days Adventist Church will deliver the opening prayers at 08:00hrs after which the march past of the participating teams will take centre stage.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony has been invited to deliver an opening address to the youths at 10:00hrs which would be followed by an Under-13 football match between Monedderlust and Haslington Sparta United FC.
Buxton United and Golden Stars will match skills in an Under-15 encounter to be followed with an Under-17 competition that will see matches played lasting 30 minutes each. The winning team will receive the RAS Aaron Blackman trophy.
Six overs cricket matches will be played between the football games. There will also be novelty events to involve families in competition including sack race, buns eating race, late for school, three legged race, egg and spoon among others.
Tomorrow, senior football teams from across the East Coast will compete for the Michael Sancho trophy and cash prizes. A 10-overs tape ball cricket competition will also be staged involving teams from Haslington and Enmore.
This will be preceded by a road race to be run from Hope Secondary School to Haslington Playfield from 08:00hrs; trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the winners. All participating teams will be required to pay an entrance fee to enter the competitions. Sports activities each day will be followed by a cultural presentation. Funds realized will go towards the provision of sports gear for the youth programme, according to the organisers.
