Headquarters yesterday handcuffed the Guyana Police Force Inter-Division Track and Field title, taking captive for a second consecutive year the coveted prize in police sports; ‘A’ Division only resisted arrest for the first two days of the competition.
But on the final day at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary, yesterday, Headquarters seized their assailant after amassing 501 points. The nearest rival, ‘A’ Division finished with 402 points while Country Division was third with 206 points. ‘B’ Division finished fourth with 191 points.
Guyana also arrested the ‘A’ Class or international title, finishing with 472 points ahead of Twin Island Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, who had 150 points for second. Antigua and Barbuda was third with 30 points, while St. Vincent and Grenadines finished fourth with 25 points. Suriname was fifth with 11 points.
Country Division’s, Jonella Jonas was Champion Female Athlete with Leota Babb as runner-up, while Marvin Tinnis and Grivon Grant shared the Champion Male Athlete prize. Joel Benjamin was Runner-Up Champion Male Athlete.
Shawn Semple won Champion Male ‘A’ Class Athlete while Kevin Bayley was Runner-Up. The Male Youth Club Athlete went to Tevin Garraway with Dwight Smith as Runner-Up. The acting Commissioner of Police, Seelall Persaud, in his address announced financial incentives for some top performers and the Champion Division.
The day featured exciting contests with St. Vincent’s, Shamora Warner sprinting to victory in the 60m race for women over 200 pounds. Headquarters’ Nickolette Shako and Kristy Roberts placed second and third respectively.
Julio Sinclair, a top thrower for the force, then should his versatility when he raced to victory in the 80m race for men over 240 pounds; Headquarters’ Kelson Barrow and Sherwin Henry placed second and third in that order.
US-based, Alita Moore, who is on an athletic scholarship, but currently in Guyana, ignited those gathered at the venue with a comfortable and entertaining Invitational 100m Women’s race that she won in 12.3 seconds. Tanashia Gilbert was second in 13.7 seconds with Tatiana Jones third in 14.2 seconds.
Headquarters’ Bobb and Tiffany Carto swept the top two places in the 100m female event with times of 12.2 and 12.4 seconds respectively. ‘A’ Division’s Cindy Fraser finished third with 12.8 seconds.
Bobb then secured a sprint double when she ran way with the 200m in 25.4 seconds with Onicka Eastman second in 25.9 seconds and Carto (26.3) third.
Tinnis won the 200m Male ‘B’ Class in 23.5 seconds ahead of Keifer Henry (23.8 secs) and Gladson Hanover (23.9 secs). Semple raced to the 200m ‘A’ Class win in a scorching 21.9 seconds ahead of Keith Roberts (22.8 secs) and St. Vincent’s, Shadell Bollentine, who had 23.4 seconds for third place.
Semple also doubled up when he won the 100m Male ‘A’ Class in 11.00 seconds with Roberts again in second with 11.2 seconds and Trinidad’s Shane Dyer (11.4) third. Tinnis also won the 100m B Class race in 11.1 seconds and of Mentis (11.2 seconds).
Country Division’s Trevor Benn won the 100m Senior Officers’ race ahead of ‘A’ Division’s Larry Josiah and ‘B’ Division’s Shayah Joseph. Headquarters’ Akelia Alves won the female race ahead of teammate Natasha Alder.
Headquarters’ Bayley put on a show in the 1500m Men, winning with 4:17.8, while Grivon Grant was second in 4:20.0 and ‘A’ Division’s Nathaniel Giddings (4:20.2) third. Jonas won the female race for Headquarters’ Dellie Williams.
