Members of the William France Differently Able Athletic Club (WFDAAC) of Mocha Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara have planned a series of activities for the remainder of 2014. The events will commence on July 27 with a seven-mile fitness walk from Grove to Banks DIH, which would be followed by another six-mile walk from Hampton Court to Charity on the Essequibo Coast on August 4.
On August 16 members of the club will journey to Berbice where they will take part in another walk on the Corentyne. The activities will conclude on August 31 with a five-mile walk from Mountain bottom Tuktit to the top of Kaieteur Falls.
France told Kaieteur Sport on Monday last that he wants to take part in the Terry Fox run on September 9 in Canada and the New York Marathon on November 2 and these local activities are planned to raise funds for the trips from which the proceeds will go towards cancer research and charity.
He informed that the walk at Kaieteur is a sports tourism activity and persons who are willing to participate can contact him on 680 3892. France is expected to be accompanied to the local events by national female athlete Alika Morgan, Joseph Hall, Helenor Mc Lennon, Secretary of the club Patricia Harlequin, amputees Javin Jetters and John Antoo and Secretary of the Essequibo Cricket Board Atto Christiani.
He explained that members of the club have to raise funds on the streets for these events which could sometimes be embarrassing and he calls on the business entities to support these charitable works for which they don’t get paid. France feels that Morgan should be rewarded for her outstanding performances over the years, stating that she should be given a house lot.
