Playing with the resilience and composure of champions, Christianburg/Wismar Secondary School (CWSS) left the opposition in tears after prevailing 2-1 on penalty kicks which was summoned when regulation time failed to break a 1-1 deadlock in their semi-final encounter yesterday, at the Burnham Park in Berbice.
Playing in the semi-final of the 4th Annual Digicel Schools Football Competition, the defending champions were pushed to the brink by Bush Lot Secondary, but proved their toughness to come from behind against a determined and well prepared team that enjoyed partisan support from the fans.
The win means that they have now set up a showdown with nemesis Waramadong who squeezed past BV 4-3 on penalty kicks after regulation time ended 2-2. This final and third place playoff will be played on August 3, at the National Stadium.
The game between the two teams started off with CWSS immediately in attacking mode and very early won a free kick just outside the 18-yard box after the prolific Shane Luckie was brought down. The ensuing spot kick was curled beautifully around the wall by Luckie, but the goalkeeper was equal to the task, diving full length to parry the ball into touch for a corner.
Bush Lot, however, never looked intimidated by the imposing Lindeners and fought back gallantly and won a free kick in a similar position, but this time Marlon Nicholson went better as he delivered a blistering strike that slithered off the goalkeeper’s hands and finished into the top right hand corner of the goal to send the home supporters into wild celebrations.
The goal came after twenty three minutes of play.
Both teams played crowd pleasing football, but the defenders on each side were a tower of strength as CWSS leading marksman Luckie and Ezra ‘Kaka’ Ashby were kept in check.
The half came with Bush Lot clinging to a slim 1-0 advantage, but CWSS enjoyed a good short session of possession play shortly before the lemon time whistle sounded.
On the resumption, Bush Lot were unfortunate not to stretch their lead when a shot from about 35 metres out crashed onto the upright and rebounded into play, while a free kick sailed just over the crossbar.
All this while, several dubious refereeing decisions evoked disgust amongst the Linden contingent and it eventually resulted in Head Coach Anthony Stephens being asked by Referee Dwayne Johnson to vacate the team dugout citing misconduct as the infraction.
Undaunted by their Coach’s exit, CWSS increased the tempo, orchestrating several telling raids inside the Bush Lot half and eventually got their reward when Anthony Layne, stationed just outside the box, took full advantage of a poor clearance following a throw in to fire past the keeper in the 73rd minute.
Thereafter it was a toe to toe slugfest as both teams searched for the winning goal, but despite both backlines exhibiting understandable weariness, they held firm until the final whistle sounded to usher in penalty shootout that saw CWSS win.
It was poor execution by Bush Lot at the spot that put paid to their quest to move forward to the final.
August 3 is a case of extension or redemption.
