– Victim may be missing teacher
The skeletal remains of a woman, with a belt wrapped around one arm, was discovered at around 17.45 hrs yesterday in a desolate, grass-filled area at Pattensen, East Coast Demerara, triggering speculation that the search for missing teacher Nyozi Goodman may have come to a grim end.
Police said that the victim was lying on her back with legs spread. A canvas belt was tied around the right hand, while the left hand was missing. A pair of underwear was found near the remains.
From its state, police estimate that the victim was slain at least a month ago which coincides with the time of St. Stanislaus College teacher’s mysterious disappearance. However, police said that because of the state of the remains, investigators may have to rely on DNA evidence to make a positive identification.
Undertakers from the Lyken Funeral Parlour arrived at the scene, but were then instructed to leave the corpse overnight to enable pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh to examine the remains at the spot. Police ranks were left to guard the scene overnight.
Nyozi Goodman’s brother, Nestor Thompson, told Kaieteur News last night that relatives will be travelling to Georgetown today to ascertain whether they could identify the remains. Nyozi’s mother has said that she is convinced that her daughter is still alive.
Kaieteur News understands that a Rural Constable made the gruesome discovery at around 17.45 hrs when he went into the bushy area to answer a call of nature. He immediately sprinted out of the bushes, mounted his motorcycle and rode to the Sparendaam Police Station.
It is unclear how the corpse remained undiscovered for such a long time, since some residents said that persons often graze cattle nearby. They all said that there was no unusual smell in the area.
On Sunday, July 6, 2014, St. Stanislaus College teacher Nyozi Goodman, 34, of William Street, Campbellville, disappeared after accompanying some of her students to the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, to participate in the Inter-Secondary School Basketball Championships.
After the game, Ms. Goodman reportedly told her students that she would be staying behind, as she expected someone to pick her up and take her home. No one has seen her since.
Kaieteur News understands that a taxi driver admitted to taking the teacher to the Gymnasium, but denied that he had picked her up after the game.
Police have repeatedly questioned the taxi driver, as well as an army rank with whom Ms. Goodman had a relationship some time ago. They have also questioned the same taxi driver about the disappearance of Police Lance Corporal Patriena Nicholson, who disappeared in August 2009.
Political activist Mark Benschop had organised a search for the missing teacher and a bag and umbrella, which relatives said may have belonged to Ms. Goodman, were discovered last Saturday in the Botanical Gardens.
The Benschop Foundation has put up a $250,000 reward for information that on her whereabouts.
