Much excitement is anticipated when the nation’s golfers converge at the Lusignan Golf Course (LGC) tomorrow for the annual Demerara Mutual Life sponsored tournament. Tee off time set for 12:30hrs.
Last year, it was Brian Hackett, Maurice Solomon and William Walker who copped the first three positions in that order with Fazil Haniff taking the Nearest to the Pin and William Walker, the Best Gross.
But this year promises to be even keener as more players will be in contention along with the introduction of flights in the play which means male golfers are grouped in three categories by their handicaps.
Handicaps 0 to 9 are in one Flight, handicaps 10 to 18 another Flight, and handicaps 19 to 28 the third Flight. Playing by Flights increases the competitiveness of the game and the demands on the players to perform at a higher standard.
While handicaps are an advantage given to players, grouping those advantages in similar categories places more work on the golfers to excel in their categories. National open competitions in the Caribbean and South America are played by Flights.
Depending on the number of ladies in the game the female Flights are arranged slightly differently. While about 10 females practice at the LGC, only four compete regularly. So the ladies have a special group.
Club President, David Mohamed has expressed confidence that the growing enthusiasm of players in the game is going to contribute to a refreshing day’s play which can even result in some new records.
The public is invited to view the competition which can last between four to five hours.
