A pathetic batting display on a low and slow Enmore track from Trinidad and Tobago saw them catapulting to an embarrassing 74 yesterday as they struggled to come to terms with a sluggish track on which the Windward Island’s pacers bowled gun-barrel straight.
By the close of the opening day of the first round of the Regional Under-19 three-day cricket tournament, the Windward’s, who won the toss, had reached 91-2 from 37 overs to claim a 17-run first innings lead with Kershaskie Jno Lewis (4*) and Tonis Simon (30*) at the crease.
Watched by a small gathering of spectators in sunny conditions, West Indies Under-19 left hander and Trinidad and Tobago Captain Jeremy Solozano and Amir Jangoo were going well at 27 without loss before fast bowler Ryan John removed Jangoo for 11. John then trapped the elegant Solozano LBW for 18, five runs later to start a dramatic batting collapse.
Only Samuel Roopnarine (10) of the other batsmen reached double figures as wickets tumbled in a heap, John (3-14 from 10 overs) and Gidron Pope (3-8 from 10) orchestrated the demise of team from the Twin Island Republic who last won the title in 2010, labored for 54 overs to score 74 runs.
Doran Edwards supported with 2-14 for the Windwards, who last won a title at this level in 2000 when the tournament was played in Guyana. Pope (20) and Melvin Gordon put together 31 for the first wicket before Gordon (32) and Simon added another 43 for the second wicket before Roopnarine got rid of Gordon at 74-2.
Simon and Vice-Captain Kershaskie Jno Lewis who was unbeaten on four were together when bails were lifted and will be intent on putting their side in total control today when the action resumes at 10:00hrs.
