On Monday, the National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD) commenced its Continuous Professional Development (CPD) courses for teachers across the country.
The programme, which is now entering its fourth year, is designed to enhance teachers’ capacity to deliver their school’s curriculum. The programme targets teachers at the Nursery, Primary and Secondary levels.
More than 300 teachers drawn from Georgetown, Regions, Three, Four and Five were in attendance at an opening ceremony, held at NCERD on Monday.
The gathering was addressed by Mrs. Jennifer Cumberbatch, Director of NCERD and Melicita Bovell, Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Education.
According to Cumberbatch, the courses are being delivered to refresh teachers’ knowledge, improve content areas and introduce new methodologies necessary for the effective and efficient teaching/learning process. It forms part of capacity building and support activities to meet the needs of the teachers.
This upgrading programme will target the following subjects in the school’s curriculum – Literacy, Mathematics, Special Needs Education, Classroom Management, Teaching of Composition and Comprehension, Guidance and Counselling, Drama and Physical Education, Portuguese, Multigrade Teaching/Differentiated Learning and Health and Family Life Education among others.
This year the programme will be expanded to cover all education districts.
Sessions will be held at North West Secondary School in Region One, Anna Regina Secondary School in Region Two, St Aloysius Primary in Region Six, the Learning Resource Centre in Region Seven, Parmakatoi Secondary School in Region Eight, Department of Education and Arapaima Primary School in Region Nine, McKenzie Primary in Region 10. NCERD and St. Stanislaus College will host teachers from Regions Three, Four, Five and Georgetown.
This is the first time that NCERD has its July/August CPD programme in all the regions across Guyana.
A total of approximately 1,000 teachers will participate in the programme this year which will be delivered by a team of instructors, comprising experienced head teachers, senior and qualified teachers in nursery, primary and secondary level schools, and officers of the Ministry of Education who have had several years of teaching experience.
The ongoing programme will culminate on Friday while another session will be held from August 4-8.
