Joshua Persaud and Kevin Sinclair stroked half centuries to lead Guyana to a huge 113 run win over the Leeward Islands when the Regional Under-15 50-over tournament commenced yesterday in Jamaica.
Persaud reached the boundary thirteen times while Sinclair slammed seven fours as Guyana rattled up 261-8 off their allotted overs, batting first at Melbourne. Persaud added 61 for the opening stand with Bhaskar Yadram (12) and 42 for the second wicket with his GNIC club mate Christopher Campbell (29) before he was dismissed for 58 after facing 50 balls.
Campbell and Kurt Lovell (31) further frustrated their opponents with a 41-run fourth wicket stand before Sinclair who faced 66 balls showed his class with an even half century to rally Guyana to a challenging total.
Kris Ramnarine and Ashmead Nedd scored 17 and 14 respectively; Marcus Duberry snared 3-29 and Zawandi White 2-31. The Leeward Islands were sent packing for 146 in 36 overs in reply. Pacer Colin Barlow gave his team the breakthrough by bowling Uri Smith for four with the score on seven and had Marcus Duberry caught for one reducing their opponents to 27-2.
Tidy bowling thereafter by the Guyanese restricted the islanders who hardly threatened despite 38 from White and 30 from Jermuel Cabey. Sagar Hetheramani was the pick of the bowlers with 3-40; Sinclair had 2-10 and Barlow 2-20.
