The two powerhouses in Police Athletics, Headquarters and ‘A’ Division have already separated themselves from the rest of the pack after the first day of the Guyana Police Force Inter-Division Track and Field Championships at the Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary.
So much so that the two Divisions are in a dead-heat on 91 points, heading into the second day of competition, today after completing eight finals; ‘C’ Division trail on 40 points with ‘B’ Division on 36, after the opening day of the annual athletics rivalry.
Police middle distance dynamo Kevin Bayley eased to a comfortable victory in 1:59.3 seconds in the 800m ‘A’ Class race ahead of Trevor Scotland, who finished in 2:01.1 and Sheldon Maison (2:08.8) respectively; the ‘A’ Class events are set out for those Police athletes, who represented the Force overseas, and the international police competition.
In the male ‘B’ Class 800m, which represents the Inter-Division competition, Grivon Grant raced to 2:02.6 to win for Headquarters. Jayon Johnson with 2:04.2 was second for ‘A’ Division while
Nathaniel Giddings (2:04.8) was third also for ‘A’ Division.
In the only other track final on the day, the women 3000m, ‘C’ Division’s, Jonella Jonas ran 12:11.5 to win from ‘A’ Division’s, Shion Boyer (13:01.3) and Headquarters’, Dellie Williams, who had 13:10.6 for third place.
Joshua Joseph sprang to 6.93m for Headquarters in the male ‘B’ Class Long Jump, beating Yoel Benjamin’s best mark of 6.87m to win the event. Trevor Williams with 6.72m was third, adding another top three placing for Headquarters.
In the ‘A’ Class male Long Jump event, Keith Roberts leaped to 6.83m to distance any thought of a challenge with Larry Josiah (5.96m) second and Sheldon Maison (5.88m) third. ‘A’ Division then swept the female Long Jump with Tandica Burgess’ 5.94m winning ahead Tracy Moses and Cindy Fraser, who recorded 4.92m and 4.85m respectively.
Warren Duncan with a throw of 31.89m won the ‘B’ male Discuss for Headquarters ahead of ‘A’ Division’s Gregory Harper (26.11m) and ‘B’ Division’s Colwyn Leacock (25.64m). In the ‘A’ Class competition, Julio Sinclair threw 38.73m ahead of Cordell English’s 37.66m and Ronald Payne’s 35.13m to top that event.
Latoya Rodney with a best throw of 29.87m won the female Discuss event for ‘C’ Division from Headquarters’ Edol Castello (26.59m) and Donna Ferguson (26.21m). In the ‘A’ Class contest, Guyana leads on 97 points ahead of Trinidad (27 points) Antigua and Barbuda (nine points) and St. Vincent and the Grenadines cellar on four points.
