National power lifting champion, Colin Aubrey Chesney, popularly referred to as ‘Mr Clean’ who was busted in late May at the John F. Kennedy Airport with cocaine pellets in his stomach, yesterday changed his plea to guilty in a New York court.
Chesney, a popular figure in Linden and in the local sports arena, appeared before Judge Margo Brodie, and waived his rights to a trial. He also withdrew his not guilty plea and instead entered a guilty plea to count one of the indictment – that he knowingly and intentionally imported cocaine into the US.
Representing Chesney was Federal Defender, Peter Kirchheimer. The court found that there was enough facts for the plea and set October 24, 2014 for sentencing.
According to court documents seen by Kaieteur News, Judge Brodie after administering the allocution, found that the plea was made knowingly and voluntarily and not coerced. A plea agreement was tendered.
Chesney was detained on May 24, last, just as he arrived on a Caribbean Airlines flight from Guyana.
According to prosecutors, Customs agents approached Chesney and requested to inspect him. During the inspection, Chesney appeared “unusually nervous. “Specifically, the defendant was physically shaking and sweating heavily.”
As a result of this reaction, he was taken to a private room for a secondary search.
It was during that search that the man told Customs Inspectors that he had swallowed “foreign bodies”.
Chesney was taken to a medical facility at the JFK Airport after he gave written consent for an x-ray to be conducted on him. This confirmed what the bodybuilder had earlier revealed. The x-ray of his intestinal tract showed that “foreign bodies” were lodged there.
Chesney subsequently passed 54 pellets, which were found to contain a total of 666.6 grams (1.47 lbs) of cocaine.
