The University of Guyana (UG) through its council has in a public missive announced it has approved the proposed tuition increase which the administration has been wanting to do for some time now.
Based on what the council is saying, the adjusted fee applies to both new and continuing students who are pursuing programmes which previously attracted a fee of $127,000. That fee would be increased to $210,000 for new students while continuing students will pay $180,000. The tuition adjustment will be effective from the 2014-2015 academic year.
As it pertains to the continuing students, their fees will be incrementally adjusted from the effective date of 2014. Therefore according to the Council, continuing students will in the year 2014 see their old fee of $127,000 increase to $130,000 in 2015; it will increase further to $145,000 and the $160,000 in the year 2016. Additionally, the council has announced that the various miscellaneous fees which were previously paid will be replaced with a Facilities Fee of $50,000.
New students (Guyanese) are required to pay $210,000, inclusive of the Facilities Fee for most programmes.
“While the fees for foreign students have not been adjusted, they will be required to pay the US$ 250 (G$50,000) Facilities Fees instead of the various miscellaneous fees, which were previously paid” the administration explained.
According to the UG administration, there are programmes where the tuition fees will not be adjusted. The table below will show those programmes along with their tuition cost. However students pursuing these programmes will be required to pay the Facilities Fee of $50,000.
The University administration explained that the tuition hike “has become necessary due to the rising cost of providing quality education not only in Guyana but worldwide.”
Additionally the administration has cited inflation as negatively affecting the allocation to the University from the Government, thereby “making the current tuition fees paid by students unsustainable and unrealistic.”
It should also be noted that when fees were reinstated in 1994, it was the understanding that adjustments would have been made to reflect the change in the exchange rates.
The university says that the “added revenue will be used to create new academic services and facilities, help hire new faculty and expand and improve programme offerings in general, to improve the quality of services offered by the University.”
The University says it is aware that many of its students and their families find it difficult to finance tertiary education, but outlined that it “can only continue to deliver to our students if the university is able to cover its operational costs. The university has been and continues to absorb as much of its increased operational costs as it can to manage its financial resources.”
The University of Guyana administration says it is “seeking the understanding and support of all stakeholders as the university doubles its efforts to provide quality education to our students.”
The table below reflects all the UG programmes to which the fee does not apply
