Dear Editor,
Yesterday I read in your newspaper a letter written by General Secretary of the Peoples Progressive Party, Mr. Clement Rohee attempting to justify the behavior of Priya Manickchand at the US embassy event. By this time it must have dawned on the PPP leadership that no amount of polishing or whitewashing can cover the crass, vulgar and ignoble outburst by Ms. Manickchand at the US embassy. Whatever the shortcomings of the Ambassador, the indecency of this Minister is without precedent in Guyana’s history.
I believe that the General Secretary called us in the diaspora several names and accused us of not having a TIN. This crude language has permeated all of the PPP. What Mr. Rohee did not consider prior to his name calling is that the PPP much like the other political parties, line up to collect our monies for their various activities. This is a fact more so at election time. Further, our contribution to the official Guyanese economy is well documented. Guyanese in the diaspora pay TIN even without a number, whenever remittances are sent by us to our relatives to support their livelihood is sent to cover their burdensome taxes.
Mr. Rohee went on to castigate the individuals who booed the Minister. These patriots were saving Guyana’s pride. He looked at the video and saw the same suspects who plot and plan days and nights to remove the PPP. I would like to ask him if he saw members of the Private Sector Commission and at least one Minister of his government on the video. Were they part of the planning committee?
I know that Boysie Ramkarran loved to tell stories. He was one of the best hecklers in the National Assembly and was very witty although I had never heard his raise his voice or insult anyone. Therefore when I read the General Secretary’s’ story that “an Englishman was making the rounds on his east coast plantation when in the presence of his gardener he expelled a fairly audible flatus. He quickly turned and stared at the gardener and asked, well? to this the gardener replied “excuse me sah.” I had a different take:
The Englishman in those days represented the colonial power, with all its trappings and monarchical power, same as the PPP today. The poor gardener was at the bottom of the economic ladder, like the present Guyanese working class. The flatulence is the regular PPP cuss-down, but today the gardener refuses to say “excuse me sah”.
