Former Parliamentarian and member of the Peoples’ National Congress Reform (PNC/R), Aubrey Norton, is dismissing
rumours that he is not challenging the leadership of the party.
The PNC/R will be holding its Congress this coming week when its leaders will be elected. According to Norton, he will definitely be challenging the current party leader Brigadier (rtd) David Granger.
According to Norton, it is not that he is against Granger’s leadership, but that Granger has his hands full with the leadership of the coalition, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and that there needs to be a leader of the PNC/R who is more focused on the party.
Norton said that he also believes too that there needs to be a leader of the party who is more focused on the grassroots level of the party which Granger has not been doing.
According to Norton, the PNC/R is in need of a leader who will better position the party to be able to successfully compete in the 2016 elections.
Asked to respond to allegations that persons are being sidelined based on their non support of the current leader, Norton said that there is evidence to suggest that this has happened.
There are reports that several of the persons who had supported Carl Greenidge in his last challenge to Granger’s leadership have been sacked.
There are further reports too that persons who have expressed support for Norton as leader of the PNC/R have been subjected to threats by very senior members of the party.
Norton said that he believes that the party members have to be treated based on meritocracy and not just loyalty and a such under his leadership, party members who do not support him as leader would not be subjected to any discrimination should he be elected leader of the party.
He has already commenced an active campaign across the country to lobby support for leadership of the party.
Senior party members have been recently raising concerns over the imminent election of a party leader and executive positions.
It was recently pointed out that the playing field leading up to this all-important vote for the party’s leader is by no means level.
One party member stated publicly that “people are genuinely fearful… Many are beginning to feel frustrated.”
According to reports, party members have been called and spoken to in a condescending and intimidating manner by a senior official of the party regarding their support for Norton.
It is also reported that many persons have not renewed their membership because of the open bullyism.
