Garville Daniels continued his rich vein of form and following a scintillating performance earlier in the week where he netted a hat-trick against Sand Creek Secondary School, bettered that feat with a helmet-trick to lead Annai Secondary
School (ASS) to an 8-1 victory over Charity Secondary School (CSS) and seal off a quarter-final place when the Digicel Schools’ Football Championships continued Thursday afternoon last.
This encounter was held at the St Ignatius Sports Club, Lethem, and a large crowd defied the rains to cheer their respective team onward. Daniels’ success occurred in the 32nd, 49th 59th and 79th minutes with support from Sherell Daniels (48, 70), Stewart Edwards (80) and Shivraj Lall (17). Andrez Smith registered a consolation goal for the losing team in the 67th minute.
Garville Daniels sent a strong message to his adversaries from the very first whistle when he sprinted towards their goal, and sent in a vicious right foot shot only to have his effort wasted as the ball slammed into the upright for the CSS custodian, Wayne Fernandes to scoop up.
Shivral Lall had teamed up with Daniels to lead his team to victory against St Ignatius Secondary in their last match and he once again proved his usefulness when he collected a pass from Daniels and deftly tucked the ball past the opposition’s goalie to register his team’s first success.
Daniels got a mite jealous, upped his game and added his first contribution after a remarkable bit of dribbling skills. Try as they might, the Annai strike force could not pierce the Charity defence for the third time in the first half, owing greatly in part to that team’s defensive prowess and the theatrics of their goalie, Wayne Fernandes; that session ended with Annai on top 2-0.
Daniels really came to life during the early exchanges of the second session and registered two quick brilliant finishes. Despite this assault, Fernandes continued to stage remarkable saves and had it not been for his theatrics, the rampaging offensive pair of Daniels and Lall would have made mincemeat of his team.
It was, therefore, a big blow to the Charity team when he was called in after receiving an injury after advancing and engaging in a scramble for the ball with several of Annai players. Luckily, his replacement, Gavin Duke, rose to the occasion, emulating his predecessor’s antics and restricted the score to 4-0.
Despite this, Daniels was not to be denied and kept up the pressure with a flat kick that sped past Duke and extended the lead to an almost unreachable mark, 5-0, for the Charity team.
The Charity Secondary School (CSS) boys had prevailed over the New Opportunity Corp (NOC) when they had faced off at the New Opportunity Corps Ground, Onderneeming, Essequibo Coast in their match just before this encounter but found the Annai duo of Daniels and Lall more than a handful.
As the minutes ticked by the Charity team began to show signs of fatigue and the players from Annai dug in. Daniels and Edwards trotted out, after their coach had made changes, and both players tucked in a goal to heap more misery on the Charity team’s shoulders. Smith’s penalty success after he had been fouled in the box provided some consolation but failed to raise the drooping shoulders of his team mates. Stewart Edwards’ 80th minute strike represented the final chapter of a sustained mauling by his team over Charity and sent them on to the next round. Activities will now shift to region four as the tournament enters the quarter-finals rounds.
