The weapon which was allegedly used in the stabbing of schoolboy, Anfernee Bowman was tendered as evidence before
the court on Wednesday.
The weapon which was identified by police investigators as an ice pick, was recovered a short distance from the crime scene where Samuel Cornelius and his classmate (Bowman) had engaged in a vicious fight, which ended tragically.
The incident took place in the vicinity of a popular Aubrey Barker Road, learning facility on February 27, 2012.
Cornelius was indicted for Bowman’s murder. He is on trial at the Supreme Court before Justice Diana Insanally and a mixed 12- member jury.
Several witnesses have since testified in the trial. These include, Trevor Bowman, Gary Bowman and Prudence Bowman, all relatives of the deceased
On Wednesday, State Prosecutor, Natasha Backer summoned Detective Constable, Deon Prince to the stand.
Prince told the court that he secured and packaged the weapon, which was collected from the crime scene at Aubrey Barker Road.
He said that he placed the weapon in a white envelope which was packaged and sealed. The envelope was presented to the court. The police man opened the packet to reveal its content. A sharp pointed instrument was then shown to the court.
Police Forensic Analyst Steven Greaves had told the court on Tuesday that the weapon had tested positive for samples of blood.
Ashton Stephen who attended classes with Bowman and Cornelius had detailed to the court the fight between his colleagues.
Stephens recalled that the fight between the two boys ended with Bowman lying in the sand, his school shirt soaked in blood and Cornelius fleeing the scene. He said that he and a female student had assisted in taking the injured student to the hospital.
Arresting officer, Police Detective Lillian Scotland testified to visiting the scene of the crime. She recalled that an ice pick was found in the vicinity of the crime scene. The detective said that she subsequently went in search of the accused.
“I went to the home of the accused that I see sitting in the docks today but he was not there.”
The Police Officer said that Cornelius was arrested after he came to the station in the company of his Attorney, Mark Waldron.
“I cautioned and arrested him… He showed me his left arm where there was a small puncture wound to the elbow and a visibly swollen finger.”
She said that the accused was medically examined before she procured a caution statement from him.
The caution statement was read to the court, excerpts of which read, “Anfernee and I were in a confrontation over a female. Anfernee pushed me and I resisted …but he pulled out an ice pick,” Scotland read.
According to the detective, Cornelius said that during the altercation he was injured and fled the area.
Cornelius left the city for Linden soon after learning of his colleague’s demise.
“I was frustrated and in shock. I went to my brother in Linden. I did not tell him what happened… I tried my best to sleep that night … The next day after seeing the newspapers my brother called me and inquired about the incident. I told him. He said that I needed to turn myself in.”
Under cross examination by Attorney- at- law Mark Waldron, the police witness explained that the murder weapon was a screw driver but that the tip was sharpened to resemble that of an ice pick. She told the court that the murder weapon was later tested for blood but not for fingerprints. She could not say why this was done.
Scotland also revealed that although she spoke with the boys’ teacher, she didn’t question vendors or residents in the area who might have been witnesses to the crime.
The detective also told the court that a medical report was never issued on behalf of the accused, even though he was examined by a doctor.
