A carjacker who lured two taxi drivers away from their regular car parks, robbed them at gunpoint, then drove off with their vehicles, was jailed for three years yesterday.
Twenty-four-year-old Keiron Cummings of ‘C’ Field Sophia, East Coast Demerara, was arrested in March after police ranks who were on stakeout at Seventh Street ‘C’ Field, Sophia, reportedly prevented a robbery attempt.
Cummings was taken into custody after opening fire at police ranks and had faced a total of twelve charges, including the home invasion of a former Assistant Police Commissioner.
According to police reports, on March 5 last, Diamond Housing Scheme taxi driver Lionel Seenarine was reportedly approached by Cummings for a lift to D’Urban Backlands, in the city. The taxi driver accepted but upon arrival at the destination, the accused pointed a gun to his head and escaped with the man’s car.
The same action was repeated five days later when he reportedly approached taxi driver Colin Williams at the Stabroek Market Park requesting to be dropped off at Guyhoc Park. Cummings, upon arrival, brandished a gun and demanded the man’s valuables. He managed to relieve Williams of $3.1M in items, including his $2M car.
As Cummings returned to the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yet again yesterday on account of the two carjackings, he changed his plea and admitted to the crimes.
Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment on each of the two robbery under arms charges. The jail terms, she instructed, are set to run concurrently.
The accused had initially appeared in court to face five counts of armed robbery, two counts of attempting to commit a felony, a break and enter and larceny charge, possession of firearm and ammunition, one count of threatening behaviour and another for discharging a loaded firearm.
He was, however, slapped with another charge after he along with three others escaped from the Magistrates’ Court on May 19 last, by ripping the grillwork and the mesh that covered the window at the back of the building to provide ventilation to prisoners in the holding cell.
On the escape from lawful custody charge he was sentenced to two years imprisonment.
Three sets of three jail terms were also handed down in his absence for barging into the home of a former Assistant Commissioner on February 20 last, holding him, his son and his daughter-in-law at gunpoint, and relieving them of over $500,000 in cash, jewellery and other items.
The prison terms are all set to run concurrently.
