Suicide continues to be at the center of most failed love affairs. It remains a serious problem for most Essequibians. This sentiment was uttered by A Partnership for National Unity’s Regional Councillor, Wazeer Latiff, in the wake of a recent suicide of a 23-year-old Charity Housing Scheme resident.
Dead is Rawl Cornelius, formerly of Charity Housing Scheme. Cornelius died on July12, at the Oscar Joseph Hospital, at Charity. He reportedly drank a poisonous substance at his 17-year-old cousin’s residence. It was reported that he was having an affair with this relative.
He took his own life after he was told by his cousin that her uncle had warned her to discontinue seeing him. Cornelius was hospitalized at the Oscar Joseph Hospital at Charity for one week before he died.
His death came a month after a teenage couple, both of Bush Lot Village, drank poison after a family member had caught them in a compromising position.
The 13-year-old former Cotton Field Secondary School student died weeks after being hospitalized at the Suddie Public Hospital. Her cousin survived.
Latiff is urging swift intervention of both religious and other leaders within the Community to host seminars, especially at schools. These seminars should educate young people about the impact of suicide and the consequences it has on the community.
He said taking one’s life is not the solution to problems in relationships. He called for more awareness messages to be filtered into the youths.
