A 4-0 whipping by St. Ignatius Secondary (SISS) over Aishalton Secondary School (ASS) earned the former school the right to challenge Annai Secondary for the Region 9 Zone title after the latter institution deluged Sand Creek Secondary 9-0 at the Annai Sports Club Ground, also yesterday afternoon when the Fourth edition of the Digicel Schools’ Football Championship continued at Annai in the Rupununi.
In yesterday’s match with SCSS, both Quincy Winter and Shivraj Lall netted hat tricks in the 50th, 60th, 61st and 3rd, 9th and 21st minute with support from Garville Daniels (5, 37) and Lotan Bartholomew (27).
The match between SISS and ASS was decided after a Quincy Winter hat trick (50,60, 61) supported by a 33rd minute effort from Carlos Isaacs.
A crowd of screaming supporters at both semi-final matches, undoubtedly the largest to date in the competition witnessed football of an exceptionally high quality as both teams scheduled to clash this afternoon demonstrated grit and determination in overcoming their respective opponents.
The two teams also have a point to prove as they emanate from different communities in the Rupununi district and have had a lengthy feud over which is the better unit. Annai earned the right to enjoy home advantage after representatives of Digicel engaged leaders of the two teams in intense discussions over the final venue; Annai eventually won out and many of the villagers hold firm to the view that the home team will start off with the advantage.
Notwithstanding, Annai Secondary School is tipped as the favourites after their crunching defeat 9-0 over Sandy Creek Secondary. Subsequently, organizers are scheduled to move further into the Rupununi Community, in Lethem, for several encounters in that region later in the week.
