The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCY&S)/National Sports Commission (NSC) annual cricket academy commenced on Monday last at Enterprise Busta Sports Club, East Coast Demerara with 35 participants.
The clinic which will last for one week is geared at improving the abilities while producing rounded male and female players. Apart from batting, bowling, fielding and wicket keeping, students will also benefit from lectures on Food and Nutrition, Leadership, Road Safety, Importance of Discipline and HIV.
The camp will conclude on Friday with an evaluation after which the students will be issued with certificates of participation. On Monday Umpire Richard Albert spoke on the laws of cricket while Coach Latchman Yadram gave the cricketers theory and practical lessons in batting and fielding while he touched on bowling and wicket keeping yesterday.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport, Yadram said that several officials from the MCY&S will deliver lectures on the aforementioned topics in the coming days. He stated that the camp will help to keep the youths meaningfully occupied and prepare them for future competitions.
“We want these students to be good ambassadors for their schools, clubs and communities”, he added.
National Under-15 Captain Bhaskar Yadram and Kavita Yadram who represented Guyana in last year’s regional female tournament are products of the academy and Yadram pointed out that they want to produce more national players.
