Four male and four female teams have now qualified for the semifinals of the North Rupununi First Division Football Championships as the final round of the tournament concluded on Saturday July 5 at Wowetta Sports Ground.
Surama FC female team qualified for the semifinals after defeating Bina Hill Institute female team 1-0 courtesy of a strike by Drusilla Bartholomew in the 30th minute. Despite the defeat Bina Hill have still qualified for the semifinals by virtue of finishing fourth in the points standings where they will have to face Surama F.C. in a replay where they will be hoping to turn the tables on their opponents. Surama FC finished second in the points standings.
Defending male champions Surama FC were knocked out of the tournament after they stumbled to defeat against Kwatamang. A strike by Ryan Donald in the 28th minute, and a double by Walcott Farias in the 65th and 86th minutes was enough to do the job as a Kwatamang eased to a comfortable 3-1 victory. The lone consolation goal for Surama FC came off the boot of Paul James in the 75th minute. With their victory Kwatamang have qualified for the semifinals where they will take on Annai United.
Three Hills female team also booked their place in the semifinals courtesy of a hard fought 1-0 victory over Kwatamang female team. A strike by Murisa Vanlong in the 23rd minute was enough to get the job done. They will now face Annai United who topped the points standings.
Three Hills male team booked their place in the semifinals after a hard fought come from behind victory against Wowetta Premier Conquerors. Wowetta grabbed the opening goal courtesy of a strike by Cline Moses in the 38th minute but Dickson Vanlong equalised for Three Hills in the 56th minute. Cline Moses grabbed his second of the match in the 71st minute but a double in the 78th and 86th minutes by Wesley Roberts ensured victory and qualification. Wowetta’s luckless tournament concluded with only a single point to show for their efforts after a single draw in four matches. Three Hills will now play Basin FC in the semifinals.
The semifinals were set for last weekend at Yakarinta Ground, with the Finals scheduled for July 19 at Annai Sports ground.
