Despite the inclement weather which left the track in a soggy state, the organizers of the Alness Race Club were able to run off their horserace event at the Club’s Alness Village Corentyne Berbice track last Sunday 12th July.
Five of the seven races on the day’s programme were held.
At the end, two horses dominated proceedings with Red Jet trained by Cleveland of the M Shamsundar Stable out of Georgetown and Affinity of the Nascimento stable and trained by Gray chalking up two wins each.
The feature race which was for horses classified G3 and lower over 1300M saw a first and second placing for horses of the Crawford stable with Monsoon ridden by Winston Apadhu winning from Bridal Stone Corner with Yap Drepaul in the stirrups . Coming in third was Red Cloud.
Red Jet ridden by S. Shamsundar blew away the opposition as it first took care of business in the 1000M event for K and L class horses. Occupying the other positions were Silver Kid, Roberro and Sand Fly.
Red Jet with Shamsundar once more in the saddles was in winner’s row again in the J3 and lower maiden event over 1000M as it came through for the win ahead of Quincy and Sunny Silence.
Affinity ridden by Ramnauth was first in winner’s row in the J1 and lower 1000M race which it won
from Royal Intention and Key for the Killer.
With Ramnauth again on its back Affinity then returned to take the ‘I’ and lower 1000M race from Savion and Party Time.
Both jockeys Ramnauth and Shamsundar were adjudged champion jockeys with two wins each. The Shamsundar and Nascimento stables copped the top stable award with their two wins.
Among some of the sponsors were Banks DIH Limited, Shariff Racing Stables, Guyana Tourism Authority, Trophy Stall Bourda Market, Fazil Yunas Construction, Rohit Lumber Yard, Kennard Memorial Turf Club, Businessmen Fazal Habibulla, Dennis DeoRoop, Balwant Singh, Lenny Singh, Guylee Hookumchand, R Matadial and Chatterpaul Deo among others.
