Bail was yesterday set at $125,000 for a Mazaruni man who appeared before a senior city Magistrate accused of inflicting harm to one of his relatives.
Dean Joseph, 32, was taken before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was charged for unlawfully and maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm to Roy Joseph on July 1.
He pleaded not guilty and sought bail through his Attorney, David James.
During the hearing, Roy whose right arm was bandaged came forth and stated that he did not wish to proceed with the matter against his relative. He said that he is leaving to go into the interior and would be unable to remain in Georgetown.
He was, however, informed that the matter will be heard in Bartica.
Meanwhile, James, in his bail application, stated that his client had no prior charge or conviction and that there was nothing before the court to suggest that Dean was a flight risk.
The lawyer said that they were relatives who resided in the same village and that it was “just a question of them maintaining an amicable relationship.”
His application for reasonable bail was met with no objections from the Prosecution thus bail was granted.
The Chief Magistrate ordered statements to be filed and transferred the matter to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court to be heard before Magistrate Allan Wilson on July 4.
