The second day of this year’s Junior Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Championships in Bermuda got going yesterday morning with the quarterfinals in each age group followed by the semifinals last evening.
In action from yesterday Khamal Cumberbatch of Bermuda defeated Guyana’s Shomari Wiltshire 11-5, 11-7, 11-8 in the Boys under-13 semi-finals, while Sarah Lewis of Guyana defeated Jamaican Mira Handa 7-11, 11-6, 11-2, 11-6 in the Girls Under-15 Plate Semifinals and Guyanese Daniel Islam defeated Bermudian Kaleo 11-5, 11-4, 11-1 for 5th place in the playoff Plate Semi-finals.
The tournament, which began on Sunday with the opening ceremony, is scheduled to conclude on July 19 and the Girls Under-19 match, the most competitive battle of the morning, was between Emma Keane of Bermuda and Victoria Arjoon of Guyana.
Victoria took an early lead at 2-0 but Emma, with the home court advantage, battled hard to come back to level the score at 2-2. In the fifth game the excitement was high as the action picked up and had the crowd screaming at the top of their voices with both girls displaying pulsating Squash. Victory eventually saved match balls twice to win 13-11. Victoria prevailed 11-7, 11-4, 8-11, 11-13, 13-11.
Also in the Girls U-19 division Guyana’s Akela Wiltshire defeated Susanna Armano of Bermuda, 11-5, 11-2, 11-3 but Guyanese Gabrielle Fraser lost to Trinidadian Charlotte Knaggs 8-11, 11-2, 11-4, 11-5.
In the Girls U-15 category there was an emotional battle between Guyanese Rebecca Low and Jamaican Sarah Conway with the Guyanese taking the game 3-2.
In the Boys Under-19 Quarterfinals, Guyana’s Nyron Joseph got the better of Daniel Murphy from the Cayman Islands 11-9, 11-6, 11-5, while in the Boys U-17 Plate Quarter-finals, Alec Melville of Guyana defeated Jacques DeVerteuil of Bermuda 11-5, 11-0, 11-7 and Guyanese Daniel Islam beat Kaleo Place of Bermuda 11-5, 11-4, 11-1.
