President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Christopher Matthias has called on the National Under-17 team to understand their role as ambassadors of this nation.
“Being a representative, you would be looked upon for identification as to who and what Guyanese are like. We respectfully ask you that as you go out to represent Guyana both on as well as off the field, and every person with whom you come into contact would have the great recognition of what our country is about, culturally, intellectually, socially, physically, in every aspect, we want to wish you well.”
Matthias made those remarks at a GFF press conference yesterday at the Windjammer International Hotel ahead of the team’s departure for the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Under-17 competition. Guyana has been drawn in a group that will see host nation Dominican Republic (July 22) battling Barbados (July 18) and Antigua & Barbuda (July 20).
The media was told that this team is the best available in Guyana at this juncture as the GFF seeks to develop its four-year plan for the development of the game.
Matthias said that this team is being used as the basis for analysis as to what needs to be addressed and corrected technically and tactically.
Also sharing remarks were Executive Committee Member, Keith O’Jeer, Manager Joseph Simon and Head Coach Brian Joseph who reiterated that his charges will do their country proud while also thanking the parents of the players for the roles they have played so far.
Those players who did not make it from the original 30 players that were selected were also complimented by Coach Joseph.
“I think we have the cream of the crop here and I expect them to do well. I expect them to make Guyana proud and make themselves and families proud. Our preparation even though it did not cover the span of time that we would have wanted, I think we’ve covered a lot of ground, the players have shown good aptitude, they have shown awareness to learn and a willingness to go beyond.”
Joseph also noted that the amount of days that they got to prepare was not an issue regarding his team. “Right now we believe that we are ready, we feel that we are ready, and will go out and give a really good account of ourselves and make Guyana proud.”
Gratitude was extended to a number of entities and individuals for the role (s) they played in assisting the team: Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport, Connections Travel, Windjammer International Hotel, GPO Registrar of Births and Deaths, Commissioner of Police, Commissioner General of the Guyana Revenue Authority, Trevor Beckles, Dion Inniss, Garfield Scott, Ms. Denise King, Digicel for the backpacks and water bottles and the Staff of the GFF Secretariat.
The team will wing out today.
