The One Mile Extension playfield has been earmarked as one of the first recreational facilities in Linden, to be upgraded with the assistance of the Christian Development Foundation, and others who so desire to see its development.
Commencing last Saturday, several youths in the community started to clean the facility, under the stewardship of APNU Parliamentarian and Pastor of the Fruits of Calvary Church, Renis Morian.
The children involved in the exercise were equipped with cutlasses, spades and a wheelbarrow, and could be seen weeding and carting away the stuff. They were only required to work for half an hour.
Afterwards they were treated to refreshments by Morian and advised to return later to do some more cleaning.
Several residents in the community commended the initiative by Morian and his colleagues, to have the facility cleared, so that more young people would be encouraged to utilize it.
“It is a good thing that is happening here, because young people need somewhere proper to play sports, and it would keep them off the streets, where they can get into trouble. I’m therefore happy that something like this is happening and especially that the young people themselves are involved; in that way they will appreciate it (ball field) more,” one resident claimed.
Those sentiments were echoed by others, who expressed the hope that more youths would become involved in sporting activities.
As regards the project Morian noted, “The fact that we are looking forward to a good life, and we are looking to empower the next generation, I recognized that most of our fields (ball fields) have run down. I also recognized that school is now closed and that we have hundreds of young people that would be out of school. If they don’t have anything to do they’ll get into trouble.
“So I have prepared a number of proposals- one to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and sport, and to other agencies for funding to get these grounds going.
The Christian Develop Foundation has partnered with the APNU to lend support to this project. Other Churches are also lending support, Morian said.
