Dear Editor,
I have been following the unfolding stories of APNU Member of Parliament Ms. Vanessa Kissoon on her suspension from the PNC. I couldn’t help but notice Kaieteur News has never carried any report on the story. What is striking though is the comment of Mr. Sean McLean in Kaieteur News seeking to put this story into racial lens. Please refer to his letter “The PNC’s intentional sidlining of Vanessa Kissoon” 13/7/2014. From what I have followed Ms. Kissoon is suspended by Mr. Granger, Leader of the PNC and she has said that this suspension was not in accordance with her party’s constitution. This should be resolved between the party and Ms. Kissoon and here’s hoping for a speedy resolution using the party’s constitution or the court if needs be.
As a youth I am watching this issue because it would help me to know if our elders respect us as equals and if we will be allowed to have a meaningful role in developing our country through political involvement. I am not a Blue CAPS but I remain interested in political events and development because I see how these decisions affect my life, family, friends, neighbourhood and country. I am a voter who value my vote.
Mr. Sean McLean is a frequent blogger on Stabroek News and he carries a PPP and pro-Indian racial line. Some bloggers have accused him of being a paid PPP blogger. I wasn’t surprised what he blogged on Stabroek News on the stories of Ms. Kissoon. I am not even surprised Mr. McLean has reproduced his SN blogs to KN letter section to target for marginalisation Guyana’s two most promising young politicians. Him choosing to play the race card is an appeal to our lowest instinct to continue the racial division in this country that has hurt the majority and benefitted a minority. Ms. Kissoon and Mr. Sharma Solomon are in my age group. This generation do not belong to the racial animosity of the past and I think I speak for most when I say we do not want to be burdened with it. We hate it, hate it, and do not want to be dirty by it!
If Mr. McLean is being honest in saying the PNC leader Mr. Granger did not visit the people of Linden during the time when they needed his support most this is very sad. It is also sad Mr. McLean only sees the development of Linden through the participation of Indian business and not the participation of all races. His claim that the Indian race owns the majority of business and employed more Africans as against vice versa is comfort to fools who accept that only one race can be business oriented and the development of any community is reliant on the business investment of only one race. It would help to bring healing to this sick and broken country if Mr. McLean can speak out against the marginalisation of Linden and sections of Guyana by this government. Mr. McLean cannot blame the two young politicians for a situation that was the creation of the government. The protest in Linden in 2012 where people were shot and died by police bullets is not the fault of Ms. Kissoon and Mr. Solomon.
With no apologies I would say it was the fault of the government for not in the first place involving the community in the decision about increasing electricity tariff. It was a protest against disrespect and what the people said would have been additional economic burdens. The government chose to respond by letting loose the police on the people. If we must blame, the government must be blamed for disrespecting the people then allowing the police to shoot them when they stood up for their rights. The same thing happened with the rice farmers on the Essequibo Coast two weeks ago. This is a government that doesn’t listen to the cries of the people. When it is also seen that an opposition (the PNC) is behaving the same way the feeling is chilling and the young are losing hope.
I would like to say to Mr. McLean the youths can do without his race hate and race baiting and if he wants to continue like this, he and those who believe in this form of division need to go and live on an island outside of Guyana. Young people have had enough of this hatred and cannot take any more. Young people are paying close attention to how the PNC will settle the suspension issue with Ms. Kissoon. I can say as young person I would be very disappointed if Mr. Granger and the PNC do not settle this story in a manner that would give us the assurance that we can play a part in party politics and be respected as equals.
