Kevin Layne named Captain: Coach Joseph confident of doing well
Guyana’s Under-17 Junior Jaguars will leave these shores tomorrow for the Dominican Republic where they will aim to win this group of the Caribbean Football Union Under-17 competition but will have to get past the host nation, Antigua & Barbuda and Barbados who have been drawn alongside them.
The 17-member team was named on Saturday following a period of encampment and Head Coach Brian Joseph has disclosed that he is confident his charges will give a good account of themselves.
Except for Keno Washington who is the lone surviving member from last year’s tournament, the rest of the team will be making their debut at this level.
Joseph noted that the players have shown a high level of focus and understanding of the rudiments of the game and he is looking forward to some encouraging performances from them.
The young Guyanese will open their account against Barbados on Friday in a game that will see the tone for their remaining two games. Barbados has always given the Guyanese a good run at every level.
Two days later, the Junior Jaguars will lock horns with old sporting rivals Antigua & Barbuda, another nation that has always brought out the best in the Guyanese. In both Barbados and Antigua & Barbuda there is a high Guyanese population and no doubt, they too would be rallying for the Junior Jaguars.
Guyana’s final game would be against the host nation on Tuesday July 22. The selected players will be back in camp today after taking a short break yesterday, they will play their final warm up game today against the Georgetown Football Club Under-20 team before leaving tomorrow for business.
They also played the Buxton and BV Triumph United Under-20 teams in warm up games as the Technical Staff sought every opportunity to get the right combination.
Following is the full team: Goalkeepers: Quazim Yusuf and Dwayne Thomas; Defenders: Randy Hohenkirk, Seon Barrett, Tariq Nelson, Teffon Alexander, Shomol Smith, Jeremy Garrett; Midfield: Kevin Layne (Captain), Job Caesar, Brian Thom, Gerald Sobers, Maurice Barnes; Forward: Keno Washington , Shamar Blair and Joel Dick.
Team Management: Brian Joseph (Head Coach), Ms. Chevon Monchoir (Assistant Coach), O’Neil Heywood (Goalkeeper Coach), Ms. Charlene Henry (Physiotherapist).
