..compliments of Edward B. Beharry and Company Ltd. and Habitat for Humanity Guyana Inc.
A few years ago, a homeless handicap, humbly requested his sustenance, beside the traffic lights of Vlissengen Road, with nothing in his ownership, but what he called ‘faith’.
Clive Richmond, 47, once an active fisherman and farmer, suffered a severe accident on the Timehri Public Road which left him physically disabled, and consequently impoverished and homeless.
He told Kaieteur News of his hospitalization at the Georgetown Public Hospital for 36 months, and said that life after the tragedy was extremely difficult. He could not work, or help himself in basic routines. This condition left ‘Clive’ to beseech help on the streets.
He explained that life on the road was ‘difficult and depressing,’ and he had no one to turn to. He said that all he had left was ‘faith in God’. He said he ‘struggled through his test’, until one Mrs. Kowlessar and her husband, housed and fed him for a number years.
However, what was recently gifted to Clive Richmond, made him ‘extremely happy, overjoyed and thankful’ to all parties involved.
On Thursday, the partnership and generosity of Edward B. Beharry and Company Ltd. and Habitat for Humanity Guyana Inc., presented Richmond his own property on a plot of land granted to him by the government, at Lot 669 Herstelling, East Bank Demerara.
This initiative was executed by Habitat for Humanity Guyana Inc. and financed by Edward B. Beharry and Company Ltd., who currently donates GUY$1 (one dollar) to Habitat for Humanity Guyana Inc.; on every product it sells, to construct homes for extremely disadvantaged individuals.
Those who attended the presentation included, the Director of Edward B. Beharry and Company Ltd., Anjuli Beharry, Marketing Assistant of Edward B.Beharry and Company Ltd., Shivanand Singh, National Director of Habitat for Humanity Inc., Rawle Small, Chairman of Habitat for Humanity Inc., William Harris, Construction Manager of Habitat for Humanity Inc., Kiambu Douglas, Clerk of Works, Cedric Daniels and the Communications Representative of Habitat for Humanity, Eilanna Luke-King.
An opening address by Eilanna Luke-King, highlighted the role of Habitat for Humanity Guyana Inc. and their progress over the past years. She said the non-profit Christian organisation’s main goal aims to eliminate poverty housing in Guyana.
She said that, to date, the organisation has built over 350 houses countrywide and encouraged locals to contribute toward the effort.
Director of Edward B. Beharry and Company Ltd., Anjuli Beharry, said that it was the company’s way of giving back. She expressed a feeling of honor to be part of giving Richmond a ‘place where he could be safe at night, somewhere he could call home’.
She said the company looks forward to continue the partnership with Habitat For Humanity Guyana Inc.
Rawle Small said that the partnership between Habitat for Humanity Guyana Inc. and Edward B. Beharry and Company Ltd. aims to ‘see changes in the life and spirit of disadvantaged people by providing affordable housing for them’.
“Clive is the most positive person I’ve ever met,” he said. “He told me that he went to many places asking for a house.”
He explained that Clive saw him as the last option, and so he made it priority to help him acquire a home.
After a reading of the scripture and exhortation by Brother Cedric Daniels, a bible, golden apple plant, food hamper and the keys to the house, were presented to Richmond. The house was blessed by William Harris, who is a pastor. A ribbon was cut at Richmond’s door to inaugurate the opening of his home.
The total cost of Richmond’s home is $2.4 million.
