The national under-15 team Friday had their first rap session at the Boardroom of the Guyana Cricket Board’s Chetram Singh Centre of Excellence and indoor practice facility at LBI as a part of the player’s scheduled Social Skills and lecture programme.
The team commenced preparations for this year’s Regional youth series in Jamaica with a one-week camp on Friday.
Former Guyana under-19 off-spinner and International Radio cricket Commentator Sean Devers emphasized the importance of discipline both on and off the field and the value of hard work.
Coach Julian Moore (3rd from left) pays attention as former Guyana U-19 off-spinner Sean Devers makes a point to the spinners in the Guyana U-15 team.
“I have had the honour of playing with two of the most hardworking batsmen and it was because of their value for hard work that they became the only two West Indians with over 11,000 Test runs. Brian Lara and Shiv Chanderpaul worked harder at their game than most players I know and that attitude made them successful.
Devers told the teenagers that hard work comes before success, adding that the only place success came before work was in the dictionary.
“It is good to have a goal, but it is more important to have a plan to achieve that goal. A goal without a plan is just a wish. The harder you work the more successful you are likely to become,” said Devers, who played senior Inter-County cricket for both Demerara and Berbice.
“You are all talented but talent alone is not enough. You need the right attitude, pride in what you do, dedication, fitness and most importantly play team cricket if you want to do well and win since cricket is a team game,” Devers, who represented Guyana from 1987-1989, told the Bhaskar Yadram led unit.
Devers, who now makes a living from covering cricket, told the youngsters what to expect in Jamaica, saying the heat of the sun and bounce from the pitches there should be some of the things they should be prepared for.
“Don’t be afraid to flight the ball and spin it and don’t try to bowl too fast,” Devers, whose best bowling for Guyana is 5-62 against Barbados, advised the spinners.
After talking with the players, who asked questions, Devers, a level-two cricket Coach, had a bowling session with the spinners in the team and wished them well as they attempt to give Guyana its third title at this level.
Also a non-practicing Umpire, Devers was invited to talk to his spinners by Coach Julian Moore who played with him for Bermine at the first division level.
GCB’s Territorial Development Officer (TDO) former West Indies pacer Colin Stuart, who played with Devers for Malteenoes at division one level, said it was good that the team was exposed to Devers as a resource person due to his knowledge of spin bowling. Skipper Yadram thanked Devers for his contribution on behalf of his team.
