The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) will lead the way worldwide in observing World Population Day. As part of the activities planned, the UNFPA’s local office will be hosting a forum intended to highlight the importance in investing in young people.
Over the past 20 years, UNFPA offices observing World Population Day in all parts of the world have employed creative means to raise awareness of important population and development issues.
This year, UNFPA in association with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport will be observing the occasion under the theme, “Investing in Youth.”
There will be a Stakeholders Forum on action to be taken to ensure that young people’s needs are prominently positioned on the national and international agenda (including the post-2015 Development Agenda’, International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) beyond 2014, Small Island Developing States (SIDS), and National Policies).
Speakers will include Ms. Khadija Musa, UN Resident Coordinator in Guyana; Ms. Patrice La Fleur, UNFPA Assistant Representative and young persons from several communities in Guyana. Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, will deliver the feature address.
Activities are expected to begin at 09:00hrs and finish at around 11:30hrs at the Herdmanston Lodge, Anira & Peter Rose Streets, Queenstown, Georgetown.
UNFPA said yesterday that it strongly believes that there is simply no inclusive development without development for adolescents and youth, especially girls, and addressing the aspirations and challenges of young people is a priority for UNFPA.
“This involves reaching those who are marginalized by poverty, at-risk and out-of-school youth and ensuring access to quality education including comprehensive sexuality education, continuing education in instances where their education is interrupted, and access to Sexual and Reproductive Health services,” UNFPA said in a release.
