– Yasin tells media
By Edison Jefford
President of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), K.A Juman Yasin, believes that Guyana is sending its best athletes to the Commonwealth Games which will be held from July 23 to August 3 in Glasgow, Scotland where seven disciplines will represent Guyana.
Yasin informed that the team will be travelling overland to Suriname,

following which it will be transported to Amsterdam, Holland via KLM Airlines. The team will travel to London, England from Amsterdam then to neighbouring Scotland.
According to Yasin, the GOA is saving about US$12,000 with that travel arrangement. He stated that it was necessary for them to “save some money”, before disclosing that the GOA is covering all expenses for the Guyanese contingent’s participation at the Games.
Asked if he believes that the Olympic Association will get value for the money it has invested in sport associations leading up to the Games, Yasin said that they can only hope that athletes put in their best performances on the day of competition.
“When we send athletes, we send the best. Whether they would medal or not, depends on the day they perform. What the GOA is doing is investing; we are making financial contributions and we are doing our best; it is for athletes to do their best,” Yasin indicated.
He shared the view that expectation on Guyana’s performance is decreased when the fact that all local athletes and coaches are merely operating on a “part-time” basis. “That is a fact that we’ve come to appreciate,” he continued.
According to the long-standing GOA head, “until we (Guyana) get facilities, athletes and coaches operating on a full-time basis, we are not going anywhere. There are so many other factors to put in place… sports medicine, dieting for instance,” Yasin added.
Chef-de-Mission of the Commonwealth Games team, Garfield Wiltshire also commented on the subject, stating that even though the athletes may not medal because of the Games’ high level, it is an investment the Olympic body is making in the future.
