A construction worker who hails from Kara Kara, Linden, appeared in the City court yesterday and was charged for the massive amount of marijuana and cocaine unearthed by the country’s main anti-drug unit on Monday in the Golden Grove/Diamond, East Bank Demerara area.
Forty-five-year-old Dexter Daniels appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry to answer to two drug trafficking charges laid against him by the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU), which claim that Daniels had in his possession 4.222 kilogrammes of cocaine and 1213 kilogrammes of marijuana on July 7 at Lot 922 Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara for the purpose of trafficking. He pleaded not guilty.
It was explained by CANU’s Prosecutor Oswald Massiah, that acting on information received, ranks from the unit ventured to a Golden Grove address, where they observed a canter parked on a bridge. He said that the vehicle was locked so CANU agents used force to gain entry.
According to the Prosecutor, a quantity of packets was found and further checks revealed that they contained what was suspected to be cannabis.
Massiah stated that acting on additional information provided, the ranks carried out a further search on the house where another substance, suspected to be cocaine, was found in a room.
He noted that the owner of the premises was not there at the time and the substance was taken to CANU Headquarters where it was weighed and tested.
The Prosecutor stated that as investigations continued, on Wednesday, July 9, Daniels “surrendered” in the company of Attorneys James Bond and Roger Yearwood. Massiah noted that while under caution the defendant claimed ownership and gave a written statement.
During his court appearance, his lawyers were absent.
Massiah offered objections to bail, citing the quantum uncovered, and that no special reason was advanced for bail.
The Chief Magistrate remanded the accused. The case was transferred and is set to be called before Magistrate Leron Daly at the Providence Magistrates’ Court on July 14.
