Osmand Mack snatches gold, Paul Adams silver on day 1
Defending Team Champions, Guyana, made an encouraging start despite fielding a small team when competition
at the 8th Annual Caribbean Powerlifting Championships lifted off yesterday at the Kings Hill, St. Croix Education Complex in the United States Virgin Islands.
The Guyanese six-member team could not have asked for a better start with Osmand Mack lifting his way to the gold medal in the 74kg class with countryman Paul Adams grabbing the silver in the said category ahead of Trinidadian, Michael Jack.
Mack, who has been a consistent top performer ever since his arrival on the local scene a few short years ago, powered his way to an overall and winning total of 640kgs; Adams tallied 635.5 with Jack way behind on 562,5.
Following is the table of how the Guyanese performed in the individual lifts:
Name Squat Bench Press Deadlift Total (kgs) Medal
Osmand Mack 255 142.5 242.5 640 GOLD
Paul Adams 232.5 155 245 632.5 SILVER
M. Jack (T&T) 195 125 242.5 562.5 BRONZE
The defending champions for the past two years were forced to field a reduced 6-member team rather than the full 8-members due to the lack of funding which has been a major bug bear for sports teams leaving these shores.
The athletes who have travelled have been able to do so due to the fact that they raised their own funds and have been complimented by Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) President Peter Green and his Executive for their resilience despite the many challenges.
Green noted too that the federation took the decision to rest their top guns to allow more exposure and development for the
upcoming promising lifters. He further disclosed that the CASH STRAPPED GAPF concentrated their efforts towards clearing of the IPF Fines as well as current membership dues to the NAPF and Governing body for the sport, IPF.
The determined Guyanese lifters will seek further glory when competition continues today at the same venue.
In the morning session competing in the 83kg class would be Germaine Snagg and Erlyn Smith.
The afternoon session will see Marino Jeffrey taking to the stage in the 93kg division.
Tomorrow (Saturday), seasoned campaigner Karel Mars will enter the fray when he comes up against the big guns in the tough 105kg class.
