The Haslington Sparta United Football Club will stage the inaugural Haslington Sports and Culture Summer Festival that will be held for two days on the Haslington Playfield at North Haslington East Coast Demerara on July 26 and 27. The main sports feature is the Grove/Haslington inter-street seven a side football competition for the Ras Aaron Blackman and Michael Sancho Trophies and cash prizes.
Michael Sancho is resident in Brooklyn USA and has expressed the desire to support the development of football in the Grove Haslington district, while on July 26, Ras Aaron Blackman, coordinator of the project also celebrates his sixtieth birthday and commits his work to the development of the young people of Guyana.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture has committed to support this Festival. On Saturday July 26 the Under-17 teams will play for the Ras Aaron Blackman trophy and cash prizes, while on Sunday July 27 the seniors will compete for the Micheal Sancho Trophy and cash prizes. A cross country race will also be run through the village on Sunday 27 with the route criss-crossing the Haslington Community starting from 08:00hrs outside the Haslington Playfield and returning to finish at the same point.
Prizes and certificates will be given to all participants. On both days an inter-street 6 overs softball cricket competition will also be held with incentives at stake. On both nights a cultural presentation will be staged highlighting the rich talent of dancers, singers, dramatists, musicians and poets.
An Entrance fee of $200 for adults and $100 for children will be charged. The funds raised will go towards the provision of football gear for the junior teams of Haslington Sparta United Football Club.
