In an effort to boost the health care services offered by the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), an overseas-based organization yesterday donated an electrocardiogram machine to the institution.
An electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) is a test that checks for problems with the electrical activity of your heart. An EKG translates the heart’s electrical activity into line tracings on paper.
EKG finds the cause of unexplained chest pain, which could be caused by a heart attack, inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart (pericarditis), or angina. It finds the cause of symptoms of heart disease, such as shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting, or rapid, irregular heartbeats.
The machine checks how well medicines are working and whether they are causing side effects that affect the heart and it also checks the health of the heart when other diseases or conditions are present, such as high blood pressure and other illness.
The donation was made by Operation Dream Catchers, a not for profit organization formed five years ago, with the sole purpose of alleviating medical disparities via the purchase of medical supplies for underprivileged charitable institutions in underdeveloped countries.
One of the Executives of the NGO, Melissa Buchan said yesterday that the donation was made so that a better service can be delivered to patients.
According to Buchan, the EKG cost the NGO approximately US$2000. The money was raised through fundraising activities in the United States.
“The hospital’s CEO, Mr. (Michael) Khan approached us with the idea of donating the EKG, so we had the fundraising to organize the money to purchase the EKG,” Buchan said.
Khan thanked the organization for making the much needed contribution. He said that the hospital already has two and the recent addition will further boost the health services.
