Shane Morris (21), Shamar Myers (38) and Egbert Nedd (67) combined in a structured display to lead Guyana Industrial Trading Centre (GITC) to a 3-1 victory when that team faced off with St Mary’s Secondary in the Digicel Schools Football Championships at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Ground, Carifesta Avenue, yesterday afternoon. Alwyn Haynes saved some face for the losers with a 25th minute success, albeit in a losing cause. GITC entered the match full of confidence after chalking up victories in earlier matches against St Winifred (6-1) and North Georgetown (5-4) and it was no surprise when Morris sent in the first goal after he managed to dribble past the St Mary’s defensive line with relative ease. It should have been 2-0 a mere two minutes later when Stephon Hopkinson was gifted a pass on his instep but bungled the opportunity with a wayward kick that slid down the left side of the St Mary’s goal. St Mary’s staged a courageous fight back and Haynes performed a solo before unleashing a fierce right foot shot which was a wonder to behold and left the GITC custodian spellbound as he equalized the situation. Thereafter, the exchanges were many with no further success until Mayers latched on to a loose ball and crossed it over to the centre of the St Mary’s goal; he watched in dismay as his effort went wasted since none of his teammates was in range to intercept. Myers’ persistence finally paid dividends when he was gifted a pass, trapped the ball and unleashed a mighty kick that settled aback the nets and gave his team the halftime advantage 2-1. Both teams were guilty of committing blunders, none more glaring than that of Joel Pollard; he received a pass mere meters from the St Mary’s goal mouth that only required a gentle tap; his was a wicked kick that missed the ball altogether for the St Mary’s custodian, Andre Douglas to scoop up. Shortly afterwards, Egbert Nedd showed him how it should have been done when he dribbled down the centre of the field and with the lightest of touches tucked the ball into the left corner of the goal leaving Douglas befuddled. That goal triggered a flurry of activity, all inconsequential, as the St Mary team played catch up football but the referee’s shrill whistle minutes later effectively sealed their fate. Meanwhile, the match between Ann’s Grove Secondary and Institute of Business Education that was to have been contested at the Betterverwagting Community Centre Ground was suspended until a later date. Both teams had convened at the venue and were getting ready for the showdown when administrators decided to launch an investigation over the validity of a player from one of the teams. Coordinator of East Coast, Joseph Wilson, said that certain anomalies necessitated further investigations and the organizers decided to be on the safe side and postpone the encounter to clarify the issue. He promised an early resolution to the matter which will determine the fate of the encounter.
