– Saffon St. repairs to be completed Friday – GWI
The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) is apologizing to commuters for any inconvenience caused by the road excavation at Saffon Street. This was in response to an article published yesterday (Tuesday July 8) in this newspaper under the caption ‘Main city artery is death trap’
According to GWI, the excavation was necessary due to a breakage on a deteriorated portion of a distribution line which occurred on June 2. After completing repairs, including restoring the excavated portion of Saffon Street, GWI was alerted to another breakage on the same distribution line which occurred on June 25.
“Following repairs to the pipeline, GWI’s Operations Team erected traffic cones and caution tape around the excavated portion of the road so that the distribution line could be observed in the event of another breakage. It was determined that due to the aged pipeline, it was necessary to conduct further examination before restoring the road since two breakages had occurred on the same distribution line,” GWI officials noted. “Subsequently, GWI observed that the safety barriers erected at the site were vandalized as depicted on the front-page of the Kaieteur News, July 8. It was noted that traffic cones were removed and that caution tape was destroyed at several sections of the excavated area. However, after determining that no further breakages had occurred, GWI is currently executing repairs with the aim of restoring the excavated portion of the street by Friday, July 11.”
