Dear Sir,
Please allow me space in your paper to have another voice heard on the issue of Guyana’s embarrassment by Priya Manickchand.
I have been reading about this very outspoken Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, in her acting capacity as Minister of Foreign Affairs and I must admit that she is rather eloquent.
Her speech was very precise and to the point. In addition, she spoke on behalf of the People of Guyana. It should be noted that her speech and the time and place of its presentation was very well selected by the “cabinet”, a body that represents the Nation as a whole.
In a simple sense, it was a message from the Government of Guyana to the Government of the United States of Guyana and on the occasion of America’s independence celebration. And Minister Manickchand is a very educated individual. In fact she is an Attorney-at-law and one of the brighter of our Government officials.
I wonder if anyone was surprised at this Minister’s public display of the PPP/C cuss-out? This type of behavior is typical of our Government officials. President Donald Ramotar was hurling abuse at Moses Nagamootoo at the memorial service of the late Dr. Cheddi Jagan at Babu John.
Anil Nandlall, Minister of Legal Affairs and Attorney General, at the recent May 5 Arrival Day celebrations, at Highbury dealt the Opposition a few blows for the Anti-money Laundering Bill. It is so obvious that our Government officials look for any opportunity to verbally strip persons who speak out against them.
Minister Manickchand seems to have lost touch with reality.
Anything that she does should be seen as coming from a Lady and a Lady who speaks for the country and should be an example to the ladies in this beautiful country.
How can we forget her ladylike behavior when she belted out certain words in relation to APNU member of Parliament (Sharma) in the Parliament, causing the Speaker to ban her from speaking unless she apologized?
And now, in the presence of local and foreign dignitaries, at a Private function, hosted by the outgoing Ambassador of the USA, she was booed and yelled at. Minister Manickchand should have been told that when an audience is booing a speaker it is time to shut up and exit the place. Was she waiting for tomatoes and shoes?
In reading the stand that this Government is taking in relation to this July 4 message from this country to the USA on that country’s independence I am of the view that all diplomatic missions should select the Government official to speak at any function they are going to host and the speeches should be edited before the mike is handed to these cuss-mouth people.
Ambassador Hardt should have yanked the mike away from this “puppet Minister” because at that stage ‘diplomacy’ was already out the window.
But I guess it was a display of class that caused the US Ambassador to allow Manickchand to continue her speech. I wonder how the rest of the PPP supporters are taking this.
I will end my letter by asking all the Ministers of this very sad Government, and His Excellency, President Donald Ramotar, if it was ok for Ex President Jimmy Carter to come to Guyana and oversee the election in this country to ensure it was free and fair? Was that not ‘meddling or Crossing the line?’
