The bloated body of a 19-year-old joiner of Levi Dam Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam was found early yesterday in the vicinity of the Tucber Sluice.
Dennis Denzil Williamson left with a group of friends and relatives on Sunday last, around noon, to go for a swim in the Canje River in the backlands of the Smythfield area, when tragedy struck.
According to information the lad was an operator at a saw mill in Demerara where his father also works. Speaking to the media his Grandmother Megan Sulker, stated that her grandson had returned home a few weeks ago and was “helping out around the house”. She stated that on Sunday around midday he along with some of his siblings, cousins and a number of other youths, including females, went on a swimming expedition to an area called “Bashmin” in the Canje River close to Mount Sinai. This was around the same time that a storm was battering the coast.
She said that it was a regular occurrence for the youths who would journey to the area in their numbers to bath and have a swim, especially on Sundays and holidays.
The woman stated that from her understanding Williams had taken two of his brothers, ages 10 and 13, out of the water and placed them to sit on the bank. He and others then returned to the water to ride the waves.
The youths were so many that no one initially missed Williamson. However, when they were about to leave it was discovered that he and another youth was missing. The other youth was later found at home. Checks were also made at Williamson’s home and it was realized that he was not there.
“Some of the boys came here and called and asked if Dennis home. After we answered in the negative they immediately left with a speed. I realized that something happened. The phone started to ring nonstop and soon after I heard his mother crying,” the Grandmother recounted.
A massive search was immediately launched by relatives and friends who scoured the Canje River. The police were also informed and joined the search parties which scoured the area until midnight. The search resumed around 05:30 on Monday and lasted until late that night.
The body was discovered around 06:30 hrs yesterday morning by a nearby koker.
According to his uncle, Malvern, yesterday should have been the day in which the young man would have commenced studies in a welding class in the town, “because he already knew the joinery work and he wanted to get a certificate in welding” .The teen’s family stated that their relative was a very good swimmer.
Investigations are continuing.
Williamson leaves to mourn his mother, Carolyn; father, Patrick; sister, Diana; brothers, Dennis, Dumaul, Darren, and Dorwaine; and Grandmother Megan.
