DEAR EDITOR,
No one can remember in recent memory when a Minister displayed such behaviour against a diplomat as occurred last Wednesday against the Ambassador from the world’s global icon—the United States. We believe that such unmannerly, offensive behaviour has no place in modern Guyana society.
Needless to say, the cuss-down action emboldened Dr. Luncheon. For him to say that the timing was right for the Minister to verbally abuse the Ambassador and tell him to butt out of Guyana’s internal affairs before he departs is foolish.
We are suggesting that Dr. Luncheon use the little rationality he has left and tell the President to call the long overdue Local Government Elections and to act like a statesman and apologize to the Ambassador and to the people of the United States. But irrationality and unsound thinking have taken over the jaded PPP regime.
It is unfortunate that the cabal has allowed the Minister to use such a distinguished occasion that is celebrated by all Americans, to behave in such unethical manner. Her verbal bashing of the Ambassador is regrettable, inappropriate and unbecoming. She should ask for forgiveness from the public because Guyanese are not known to speak in such derogatory manner. Instead, she went on national TV and boasted of the numerous friends who congratulated her.
The Minister’s behaviour demonstrated the dangers that lurk when those with a competent and fundamental knowledge of the problems and issues facing Guyanese pronounce on them in a civilized and respectable manner. Ambassador Brent Hardt’s statement at the Blue Caps leadership conference leaves the door wide open for the Freedom House rag-tag crew to pounce on him like crocodiles who lay waiting to devour anything in their path. Such vicious and ruthless attacks have been the hallmark of the PPP cabal since they assumed power 22 years ago but more so during the 12 years of the blighted Jagdeo regime which has scarred the nation. Today, Guyana is a failed state and a disfigured country marred by high crime, massive corruption, cuss-down behaviour, disrespect for the people and contempt for the Constitution.
Language is a tool and that tool was poorly used by the Minister to dig herself and her party into a hole, which they fell in with their eyes wide shut. In fact, she dug a deeper hole for herself by cussing down the Ambassador and labelling him a trouble maker and an interloper into Guyana’s politics. Her crude remarks led the invitees to boo and heckle her to the point where she was forced to leave his house in disgrace. She has embarrassed the entire country.
Indeed, the Ambassador bluntly refused to counter such an irrational statement. Instead, he reached out to all Guyanese and told them that all is not lost and that they have to continue to fight for local government elections. He candidly stated that when a Minister resorts to name-calling and abusive language, he/she has nothing left in the think tank. We say to all Guyanese that the Minister’s behavior is inexcusable. We call on all Guyanese to join with us and demand her resignation.
We sincerely hope that very soon a new school of political thought would emerge in Guyana to teach the dictators at Freedom House how to debate issues and accept criticisms without resorting to vulgar and abusive attacks; how to apologize unreservedly and honestly for the wrongs they have committed and the mistakes they have made; how to avoid blaming the opposition and the private media, especially Kaieteur News, for exposing their corrupt practices; how not to blame the US Ambassador and other diplomats for calling for local government elections which is long overdue; how to listen to the views of the people without disparaging them, and how to retreat from costly dead-end positions with humility and sincerity.
