Akeem Wilkinson pedaled to his maiden win in the feature 35-lap school boys and invitation race when the 3rd Malta Supreme 11-Race National Park Meet came off yesterday at the inner circuit of the Park.
Wilkinson took the win in a photo finish from veteran campaigner Warren ‘Forty’ McKay in One Hour 17 Minutes 24.94 Seconds. There was some amount of uncertainty as to who the winner was, given the close nature of the finish, but after some amount of consultation, Wilkinson was declared the winner.
Junior competitor Alanzo Ambrose took the third place and was followed by Paul Choo Wee-Nam, Michael Anthony and Stephen Fernandes to close out the top six.
Anthony had earlier won the juvenile 10-lap race, recording a time of 24 Minutes 09.41 Seconds; crossing the line ahead of Alanzo Ambrose and Raphael Leung. Anthony won both sprint prizes.
Linden Blackman was the lone Over-50 rider; Montgomery Parris won the Over-60 contest from Maurice Fagundes with Shameer Baksh taking the Under-50 event from Mark Sonoram and Wasim Hasnoo in that order. Baksh stopped the clock at 12 Minutes 07.35 Seconds for the 5-lap race.
Keon Thomas was the top mountain biker on the day, winning the 5-lap showdown in 11 Minutes 59.41 Seconds. Emanuel Gay Raul and Julio Melville completed the top three spots in that order.
Jaleel Jackson won the 12-14 boys and girls 3-lap race in 14 Minutes 08.06 Seconds from Omesh Leonard who won the prime prize and Ammo Gomes.
Sherwin Sampson was again dominant in the BMX 6-9 and 9-12 events over 2 and 3 laps respectively. He beat Sham Sue Hang and Alexander Leung in the 6-9 contest whilst taking the 9-12 race from Kristoff Austin and Taran Garbarran. Adrian Sharma was better than Keon Rutherford in the open BMX 3-lap showdown.
Banks DIH Malta Supreme Brand Manager Colin King was on hand to deliver brief remarks to the participants and officials. He complemented the riders for coming out to make the event another success, noting that Banks DIH has always been in the forefront of promoting the development of sport across the board in Guyana.
Zooming in on the finish of the feature race, King said that it was a very close finish and reminded the cyclists that they must always respect the decisions of the officials as final.
National Coach, Hassan Mohamed, who organised the event, also thanked the riders for making the meet another successful one.
