The University of Guyana lifted the East Coast title of Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) Friday night in a come-from-behind effort against President’s College at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall when YBG held its regional conference finals.

The University won 64-54 with Jonathan Pooran, who was later named Most Valuable Player (MVP) on the East Coast, leading the way with 22 points. Pooran was effective primarily in the paint, scoring easily at the rim.
Pooran also collected seven rebounds and completed two assists in a game-winning performance.
In the Upper Demerara/Kwakwani conference, Kwakwani Secondary School embarrassed Linden’s Mackenzie High School 59-20 in a one-sided affair.
Mackenzie High, once a formidable force in schools’ basketball, found it difficult to score against the tough Kwakwani defence. Stanton Rose was MVP with 14 points, five assists, six rebounds and five steals.
In the Georgetown final, Marian Academy was able to prevail over a shorthanded Bishops High School in a low-scoring game that ended 37-27. Bishops played without their star player Marvin Durant, who was ejected in the semifinal, forcing him to miss the final.
Durant watched from the stand as his team put up a valiant effort with Judah Stephney putting in an outstanding performance to gain the MVP award with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
In the Berbice conference final, New Amsterdam Multilateral prevailed over JC Chandersingh 46-38 to win the Ancient County title.
Ramone Fodgenay top scored with 12 points while adding eight rebounds, four assists and four steals for MVP honors.
Meanwhile, following the Conference Finals, all the top schools in the various conferences will now clash in the National School Basketball Festival (NSBF), which is set to begin tonight.
New Amsterdam Multilateral will face Mackenzie High School, while President’s College will go up against St. Roses High School in under-19 clashes. The other game will be an Under-14 clash between Marian Academy and St. Roses High. Digicel, Beharry Group of Companies and Banks DIH are the sponsors of the event.
