The Guyana Horse Racing Authority’s second executive meeting ended in chaos due to an individual’s misconduct towards the President and secretarial mismanagement.
In an interview with Kaieteur News, the GHRA’s President, Vickram Oditt, expressed his disappointment with the President of the ‘Kennard Memorial Turf Club’ and the secretarial management within the Guyana Horse Racing Authority.
He suspended Ms. Zenzie Goring, Secretary of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority, for ‘gross insubordination and other charges’. He said that, Mr. Ramnauth of Port Mourant Turf Club will act as Secretary, until further notice.
Oditt was elected President of horse racing body at the ‘Annual General Meeting’ on February 9, this year.
He explained that after this meeting, the association planned two executive meetings with prior notices and agendae.
Oditt explained that the second executive meeting was adjourned because of the ‘threatening and abusive behaviour’ of R. Matadial, the President of the Kennard Memorial Turf Club. This was due to his subsequent inquiry for Mr. Raj Poonai, GHRA’s legal adviser, to address this matter under chairmanship, in a meeting with Matadial and members.
The meeting was scheduled for June 28, but executives were only notified on June 27. The meeting was rescheduled because of Matadial’s claim that he was given insufficient notice, as members were notified only one day before the meeting.
Oditt said that Mr. Poonai therefore advised the Secretary to ‘reschedule the meeting to July 12 to ensure that adequate notice was given’.
Oditt opined that on June 28, the Secretary, Zenzie Goring, disregarded the instructions to postpone the meeting, and was present with a ‘few’ executives at the Bush Lot Turf Club. He said that Mr. Sookdeo, the Secretary of the Bush Lot Turf Club, hosted the meeting. Sookdeo later confirmed that there was only a general discussion among the few members present.
He continued that, the press release purportedly issued earlier this week by the horse racing association, ‘through a complicit Secretary’, was a ‘useless document, which had no legal standing.’
He said, “The GHRA is about horse racing, but it should never be run in a cowboy manner.”
He noted the accredited representatives of the reputable Turf Clubs attached to GHRA, namely, Port Mourant Turf Club, Ryan Crawford Memorial Turf Club, Norman Singh Memorial Turf Club and the Bush Lot United Turf Club have all expressed their support for his position as the duly elected President, and remains firm that the Authority will implement measures to improve horse racing locally.
