– bus driver detained
A 22-year-old truck driver died at around 14.00 hrs yesterday after being struck by a speeding bus near Aruni, on the Soesdyke/ Linden Highway.
Lenny Jaisingh of Lot 7-8 Sarah Johanna, East Bank Demerara, was reportedly struck from behind shortly after emerging from his vehicle to clean his number plate. He succumbed at a private city hospital.
A brother-in-law of the victim told Kaieteur News that Jaisingh and another driver had come from an interior location earlier in the day and had parked their trucks on the highway.
Kaieteur News understands that at around 10.30 hrs, Jaisingh emerged from his vehicle and cleaned one of his number plates. He was heading back into the truck when a bus which was heading south up the highway struck him from behind.
Kaieteur News understands that the bus driver claimed that he lost control and swerved into Jaisingh while trying to avoid a pool of water on the roadway.
Jaisingh’s brother-in-law said that the truck driver was still alive when he was rushed to a private hospital in the city. The injured man was placed on a life-support machine but passed away at around14.00 hrs.
The bus driver has been detained.
The relative explained that Jaisingh’s fiancée is overseas and the couple had expected to be married within a few months.
“This is a real blow to the family…he (Jaisingh) only buried his father about a week ago,” the brother-in-law said.
He said that one of Jaisingh’s brothers was married last Sunday, and the family was attempting to put the father’s passing behind them.
“We were trying to turn a new page (after the father’s death) and now comes this…”
