– granted $175,000 bail
A man who was entrusted with the care of some school children has been charged with raping one of the minors.
Colin Caesar, 47, called ‘Ice Cream man’, of Fort Ordnance, East Canje Berbice, who is a businessman, as well as a community and youth group leader, is accused of having sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl.
He appeared on Tuesday at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Shurdel Isaacs and was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge. He is alleged to have committed the act on May 19 in a car on a street in Fort Ordnance Housing Scheme.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Godfrey Playter did not object to bail, but told the court to consider that the victim lives a few houses away from the accused. Caesar was told that he should not be seen within 20 feet of the victim.
It is reported that the accused and the victim – who is a third form student of a popular secondary school in New Amsterdam – are well known to each other. The man and the girl’s family are also well acquainted and on occasion the girl’s family would usually entrust her in Caesar and his family’s care. Caesar, who is an executive member of the Fort Ordnance Housing Scheme Developmental Organization, is also a youth group leader in the area.
It is said that on the day in question the girl was left with Caesar and his family, and he allegedly had sexual intercourse with her.
The matter was reported and after investigation the man was arrested and subsequently placed on bail. A file was prepared and subsequently sent to the DPP for advice.
In court, bail was set at $175,000. Caesar is to report once every fortnight to the Central Police Station.
He is scheduled to return to court on July 18.
