Friendship Secondary (FSS) and Covent Garden Secondary Schools (CGSS) engaged in a fierce battle for honours and after a keen tussle, the former institution emerged victorious compliments of a 64th minute strike by their captain, Naphtali Joseph, when activities continued in the Digicel School Football Championship at the Hauruni Community Centre Ground, Linden Soesdyke Highway yesterday afternoon.
The score is hardly reflective of what transpired in the match as both teams wasted golden opportunities that cost them dearly and almost sent the game into penalty kicks. Matthew Robinson represented the CGSS and should have been the one to register the first goal but he mistimed a free kick just outside the box much to the dismay of his teammates.
Jauanzaa Garnett of FSS was also guilty of a similar offence when he struck with much force and little direction to waste a clear chance that slammed into the uprights and bounced back into play.
Joseph next erred when he collected a neat pass and sent the ball past the Covent Garden custodian only for the referee to blow offside rendering his effort inconsequential. The tussle for the lead continued with both sides launching ferocious attacks and likewise, both teams exhibited staunch defensive skills that kept the score at a nil all stalemate at the end of the first session.
The whistle to commence the second session was still echoing when Omali Henry wended his way to the Covent Garden berth in what was the best scoring opportunity presented for his team. He was on the verge of sending in a wicked right foot shot when one of the opposition’s defenders brought him down in what the referee ruled was a dangerous play and awarded Friendship a penalty.
The kick was precise and sharp but the CGSS custodian chose the right side and averted sure disaster after grabbing the ball on the second attempt. Thereafter, CGSS launched a vicious attack and Matthew Robinson dribbled down the left wing and chipped the ball over only for the FSS custodian to intercept.
Kevin Sobers almost sent the FSS ahead shortly afterwards when he dribbled to the opposition’s goal but when all alone with the goalie he lost his nerve and the goalie scooped up his tame flat footed strike.
As the seconds dwindled, goals seemed hard to come by and the few spectators were already anticipating the imminent penalty shootout when Joseph, who had been hard at work in the midfield position collected a dolly of a pass just to the left of the CGSS goal and sent in a mighty kick that flew past the goalie standing in the centre of the goal.
Covent Garden counter attacked and was awarded a corner kick but the FSS defenders tenaciously held on to the slim lead with good defensive tactics and despite their most valiant efforts, the CGSS players had to contend with the ‘needle’ as the final whistle sealed their fate. Activities continue today with matches at venues countrywide.
