Achievers Volleyball Club (AVC) of West Demerara defeated Port Mourant Training Centre (PMTC) of Berbice on Sunday last to win the first place trophy when the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) hosted the 4th annual Trophy Stall Volleyball competition at the Port Mourant Training Centre, Corentyne.
The competition attracted six male teams and two female teams: PMTC, Port Mourant Jaguars, Rollers of New Amsterdam, Achievers of West Demerara, GDF, BVA Under-19, BVA Select Female and GDF Female.
The competition was played in hot sunshine on a round-robin basis with the four top teams advancing to the knock-out segment to determine the winner. The females played two matches which were won by the GDF 25-8, 25-10.
In the male knock-out stage, Achievers defeated Rollers 30-23 while PMTC swept past BVA U-19, 25-15.
The final between PMTC and Achievers was competed in semi-darkness due to the inadequate floodlights at the venue.
PMTC raced to a sizeable 15-4 lead in the match with both teams deciding that the first to score 30 points would be declared the winner. When the teams exchanged sides PMTC found points hard to come by and the determined and more focused Achievers after initially appealing about the bad light and wanting to forfeit the match, battled to even the scores at 21-21.
Achievers then pulled ahead 23-21 and PMTC seemed to fall apart executing a series of erratic spikes and serves into the net thereby allowing Achievers to race to a 29-23 lead. PMTC after a time- out managed to creep up 28-29 but by then it was just a matter of a forced error and Achievers scored the point needed to seal victory, winning 30-28.
Cleveland Peters, Wendell Austin and Deven Samaroo were the main architects of the Achievers victory.
In the round-robin stages: PMTC defeated GDF 30-28, Achievers 36-34 and PM Jaguars 30-16. Rollers got the better of PM Jaguars 37-35, BVA U-19 30-20 and GDF 30-25. Achievers took care of BVA U-19 30-14, PM Jaguars 30-15 and Rollers 30-23. The BVA U-19 beat GDF 34-32.
At the presentation ceremony, Competition Director Godwyn Allicock expressed thanks to Mr. Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall for his sponsorship and unwavering support for the promotion and development of volleyball in Guyana. He congratulated the winner and thanked all teams for participating.
Prizes were presented to the following: Female Category – Leanna Miller for being adjudged the MVP, Best Setter and Best Spiker. Corletta Mc Naughton (Best Server) and Melissa Marks (Best Defense).
In the Male Category – Cleveland Peters was adjudged MVP, Best Spiker and Blocker; Jason Seelochan (Best Setter), Ian Bagot (Best Server) and Wendell Austin (Best Libero).
BVA President Gregory Rambarran in his remarks thanked the sponsor, participants and officials and for making the tournament a success but chided the teams for not being punctual.
He complimented the winners for remaining focused despite the lighting conditions and said they displayed the true spirit of the game pointing out that volleyball fosters friendship apart from competition. The teams were urged to continue practicing for upcoming competitions.
Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) President, Mr. John Flores who was on hand for all the matches and assisted in officiating as a referee, reiterated what was said by the BVA and praised the sponsor, organizers and players.
The next BVA activity is scheduled for July 11 and will be a competition for Under-16 school children.
