Queen’s College (QC) exacted revenge on Carmel by beating them 4-3 in penalty kicks shootout after regulation time ended in a 2-2 stalemate yesterday, at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary.
Action in the clash that featured eventual winners Queen’s College (White jerseys) and Carmel Secondary School yesterday.
The fixture in the Digicel Schools Football Competition had to be replayed following a protest by Queen’s College after it was established that Carmel who won the first encounter 2-1 had fielded twelve players during the game which gave them an unfair advantage, forcing the Organisers to order a rematch.
Carmel looked to be resolutely on course to register another win and seemed to be coasting along merrily, before QC begun their comeback. It started with Joel Richards, who pounced on a pass from mid-field, before rifling a shot past the goalkeeper three minutes after the resumption from the break.
Bouyed by their quick strike in the second period, QC attacked with menace, but the experienced Marlon Allen, who had netted both goals for Carmel, came back to bolster a backline that was clearly sagging under the pressure.
However, in the 78th minute of play, Shemar Britton, more known for his tremendous exploits on the tennis table, turned hero when he leaped above both Allen and a hesitant advancing keeper from a bouncing ball to head into an empty goal.
It immediately evoked wild celebrations from the small band of QC supporters as they sensed momentum had swayed in their favour. Allen clearly the best player in for Carmel tried on a few occasions to come forward in search of a goal, but the penetrating runs by the QC strikers kept him afraid to go forward with conviction and the score line stayed level until the final whistle sounded.
Earlier, Allen got the first opportunity to score when his side-footed shot sped past the advancing QC keeper, but cannoned on to the left upright and rebounded into play, before being cleared by a defender.
He, however, quickly made amends when he weaved past two defenders, before beating the keeper, who had pressed forward with the hope of narrowing his angle, but his well-placed effort ended up inside the goal. That came in the 10th minute of play.
Allen returned thirty minutes later to replicate a similar goal, outpacing his markers, before hammering a fierce shot past the goalkeeper which gave them a 2-0 cushion. That lasted until the break. His efforts proved futile in the end as QC, who had also trailed in the shootout, came storming back once again to seal the win.
