An electrical fire which destroyed the upper flat of a two-flat building at Phantom Street, Anna Regina, on Friday, has left the Balkaran family counting their losses. The family members were unable to salvage anything.
Sasewattie Balkaran recalled returning to her residence from work when her granddaughter who was in the upper flat, alerted her to the fire.
Mrs. Balkaran said that her granddaughter first noticed the fire emanating from the upper flat of the building but before she could have ventured up to the flat, the flames had already engulfed the building.
Balkaran said that some men who were drinking next door, at a liquor restaurant came over; they formed a bucket brigade and assisted in extinguishing the fire.
Although fire attendants from the Anna Regina Fire Service were alerted of the fire, they arrived without water, Mrs. Balkaran said.
She said since the fire Friday afternoon, she has been forced to seek refuge at her next door neighbour.
She said she and her family had lived at the house for over two decades.
